“Why do we rush to grow?”

has become the signature quote from ‘Diary of a Freelancer’. It was one of those pieces that clicked into place, almost arriving fully formed.

I was thinking about awards we give out like ‘30 under 30’ and wondering why it was considered an achievement to grow something fast. Why did the age of the person matter?

and then it arrived, the idea of a tree. Being something that takes a long time to grow and is of more long term value than a fast growing plant. It’s value is layered, and can last decades.

The idea of ‘weeds’ is to make a point. I’m actually the first to say that there is no such thing as a weed, the classification depends entirely on your perspective. Mint in the wrong context could be considered a weed…I love mint.

So that’s the story of this aphorism.

— Amanda

I decided that I wanted my work, my business to be a tree. Yielding good healthy creative work for years, for others as well as myself, lasting long after I am gone. To grow ideas that were long standing.
